There are only two niches for affiliate marketing that I recommend. After reading this post, I hope you agree with me.
Fitness/Health & Making Money Online. That’s it. Just two. Don’t overcomplicate it – pick just one sub-niche, or scattergun several of them… and make money.
Yes, I’m well aware that many people make money online with other niches (indeed, I do.) – but the purpose of this blog is to show beginners how to make money without investing a ton of money upfront – and maximizing your chances of success. Could you make a full-time income with a blog about your miniature train set? Absolutely! But does it have as many rabid buyers as those in the Fitness/Health or Make Money Online niche?
People will cut off their pinkie finger if you can help them lose the extra 100 pounds they’re living with, or show them how to earn a great living from home… But miniature trains? Not quite in the same league. Go with what is a virtual certainty – then you can branch out to a hobby site if you want.
Now there are many sub-niches here… for example, in the Fitness/Health niche we have:
- Weight loss: This is a very popular niche, as many people are looking for ways to lose weight and improve their overall health. There are many different products and services that can help with weight loss, such as diet plans, workout programs, and weight loss supplements. You can zero in on popular diets such as Keto or Carnivore.
- Fitness: This niche is also very popular, as many people are looking for ways to get in shape and improve their physical fitness. There are many different products and services that can help with fitness, such as workout equipment, fitness apparel, and fitness classes. Some people make a very good living selling just exercise equipment through the Amazon partnership program.
- Nutrition: This niche is important for both weight loss and fitness, as it is important to eat a healthy diet in order to achieve your goals. There are many different products and services that can help with nutrition, such as cookbooks, healthy meal delivery services, and nutritional supplements.
- Yoga: Yoga is a popular form of exercise that can improve flexibility, strength, and balance. There are many different yoga products and services available, such as yoga mats, yoga apparel, and yoga classes.
- Pilates: Pilates is another popular form of exercise that can improve flexibility, strength, and core muscle strength. There are many different Pilates products and services available, such as Pilates mats, Pilates apparel, and Pilates classes.
- Running: Running is a great way to get in shape and improve your cardiovascular health. There are many different running products and services available, such as running shoes, running apparel, and running apps.
- Cycling: Cycling is another great way to get in shape and improve your cardiovascular health. There are many different cycling products and services available, such as bicycles, cycling apparel, and cycling apps.
- Strength training: Strength training is important for building muscle and improving overall strength. There are many different strength training products and services available, such as weights, weight benches, and workout programs.
These are just a few of the many sub-niches that you can choose from when using affiliate marketing in the fitness & health niche. The best sub-niche for you will depend on your interests and expertise of course.
In the other niche – Making Money Online, you’ll find these sub-niches:
- Freelance writing: There is a high demand for freelance writers, and many people are willing to pay for quality content. You can find freelance writing gigs on websites like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer.
- Blogging: Blogging is a great way to share your knowledge and expertise with others, and you can also make money through advertising and affiliate marketing.
- E-commerce: You can start your own online store and sell products or services. There are many different platforms that you can use to create an online store, such as Shopify, WooCommerce, and Magento.
- Affiliate marketing: You can promote other people’s products or services and earn a commission for each sale that you generate. There are many different affiliate programs available, so you can find one that is a good fit for your niche.
- Online courses: You can create and sell online courses on a variety of topics. This is a great way to share your knowledge and expertise with others, and you can also make a good amount of money.
- Social media marketing: You can use social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to promote your products or services. This is a great way to reach a large audience and generate leads.
- Search engine optimization (SEO): You can help businesses improve their website’s ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs). This can help them attract more visitors and generate more leads.
- Web design: You can design and develop websites for businesses. This is a great way to use your creativity and technical skills to help businesses succeed.
Which Niche Did I Choose?
In selecting the wide niche of Affiliate Marketing – I’ve chosen a slightly focused niche – it would look strange indeed if you began reading posts about making money with Youtube videos – yet this niche I’ve chosen is large enough for me to post hundreds of articles on the topic. If you want to earn money making Youtube videos, this isn’t the place to find out anything about it.
Your goal with your blog will be to write a minimum of 100 posts over a year’s time – so if you’ve chosen a niche too small – you will struggle to find enough content. When you select your blog’s niche, ask yourself the following questions:
- Does it get enough search traffic from Google?
If you chose “Pink Elephants” – will there be enough people looking for them? Niches for affiliate marketing must have enough searches to make it worthwhile. - Is there a multitude of areas within the niche that you can write about?
If you’ve chosen “Pink Elephants” – you can’t write about blue ones… This is where you need to think about how wide a net you’re casting with your niche – not too small, and not too big. - Is there a wide enough variety of affiliate products available?
If you choose between Fitness/Health or Making Money Online, this will never be a problem for you – you’ll have a wide variety to choose from… But just how much can you write about “Pink Elephants?” - Can I see myself writing at least 100 posts within this niche in the coming year?
If you can’t – then move on. You aren’t going to be seeing any money until you have a deep enough website to attract readers (and customers!)
When picking niches for affiliate marketing – take a close look at the different possibilities of the niche… if you select “KetoDietRecipes.com” as your niche – you’ve limited yourself unnecessarily… a wider net should be cast – perhaps “WeightLossDiets.com.”
With “KetoDietRecipes.com,” it would look silly if you started posting exercise videos, or a dive into a Vegan diet… but with “WeightLossDiets.com,” you could feel free to post such articles. You want to select a niche that is wide enough to be able to post hundreds of articles, but not so wide that you’re lost in the ocean.
Now, this isn’t to say that you can’t make money with a really small niche – for example – “modeltrains.com” would be a fairly small niche… it’s just a toy train, right? But model train aficionados are fanatics and will spend insane amounts of money for their hobby. Something like this would be an exception to the rule I suggest of sticking only with Health/Fitness & Making Money Online – and this would also likely be a “Do What You Love” type of site… so feel free to dispute me if you have solid reasoning behind it.
But for a first site – I don’t recommend doing what you love, I recommend that you stick with the classic two – Fitness/Health or Making Money Online. (Some people add “Relationships” as a possible niche – but I don’t. Your choice!)
When picking your niche – you should make sure that there’s something to sell in that niche – if you take my advice and stick with Fitness/Health and Making Money Online – you won’t have any problems finding ways to monetize your blog when the time comes… but if you’ve decided to do what some suggest: “Do What You Love” – I guarantee you that you might end up with a very popular website, and no money.
I’ve practiced & taught a martial art for over 50 years – and I created a website that ranked #1 for many different keywords related to that martial art topic – and I could count it a successful month if I cleared $50 in affiliate sales (mostly through Amazon). The highest month I made $200. I did what I loved, and I found that it didn’t love me back!
As to the actual products – you can sell either hard products, or downloadable software or courses. Selling actual hard products, such as this exercise gadget on the right…
… is easy – everyone can see the product, and they have a fairly good idea of what it will do for them… but you’re only going to make a very small percentage of the sales price.
Software, courses, and eBooks; on the other hand – are more difficult to convince potential buyers – but the cost is so low that it’s not uncommon for the seller to offer you from 50% all the way to 100% of the sale. How can someone afford to pay you 100% of their profit? Easy – it’s a monthly fee, where you’ll get 100% of the first month, and the seller gets the rest (or pays you a smaller percentage in monthly reoccurring.)
With few exceptions, I strongly recommend starting off with selling downloadable products… they are somewhat harder to sell – but the two niches for affiliate marketing I recommend are ones in which your potential customers are looking for a solution to their problem.
I do however – recommend that you become an Amazon partner – as there are times when a ‘hard’ product just seems to fit, and it can be an easy sale – but the majority of your affiliate sales pitches should be on the downloadable ebooks that can pay you $20, $50, $100 or more per sale.
Just remember – chose any niche you want – but if you want the greatest chance of success – go where the hungry fish are… People seeking solutions to their health – or those wanting to quit their day job – are like a piranha – they’ll bite on anything dangled in front of them that might solve their problems… be a problem solver, and people will reward you with affiliate sales…
